The idea of Brownwood Community Church was first explored while I was in Atlanta, Georgia at a conference. I began to write in my journal about the kind of church I would like to pastor. The defining characteristic would be a commitment to reach the un-churched people of the Brown County area. Knowing there are over 16,000 un-churched people in the area, which is over 80% of the population, made me want to do what nobody else is doing, so that we could reach the people nobody else is reaching. I did not want to start another church, but I wanted to give Brownwood a different kind of church.
I resigned my position as associate pastor at a denominational church and set out with my family and a few friends to start a different kind of church. We held our first planning meeting just before Thanksgiving 2016 in our den with about 20 adults, who all had a desire to do something different as it relates to church. We began to meet for worship and prayer at Adams Street Community Center in Brownwood a month later and were having weekly worship services by February 2017.
God has brought all kinds of people to Brownwood Community Church. We have diversity of race, religious background, age, gender and political preferences. We value dialogue as much as sermons, which I believe contributes to our diversity and engagement level. Adopting the name Brownwood Community Church was by design because we desire to form deep relationships with one another, which builds authentic community, and we want our community to know that we are for them.
If you are on a spiritual journey, no matter where you are on that journey, I would like to invite you to come and see for yourself what we are all about. You may be surprised by how non-religious we are, but we are not ashamed to proclaim the name of Jesus. We have found that Jesus is irresistible, and our part is to introduce you to Him.
I hope to see you soon.
